2008 Victory Vision, Popular Mechanics, August 2007

Long, low, and retro-futuristic, the fearlessly styled Vision announces Victory's intention to play hardball against flagships from BMW, Harley-Davidson, and Honda. But don't let its slick, fashion forward bodywork fool you: the 450 miles I logged on Street and Touring variants were a surprisingly viscerally experience.

The heart of the Vision-both visually and emotionally-is a throbbing 106 cubic inch (1,731 cc) V-twin. Exposed to the elements, the fuel-injected 92 horsepower mill warms your calves and thumps out a guttural song, providing 90% of its 109 ft-lbs of torque at a mere 2,000 rpm. Twisting the throttle delivers hearty acceleration in any gear, though the Vision's grandiose personality is better suited to cruising than drag racing. Linked brakes take the guesswork out of panic stops, but an adherence to old school bike building habits make the 2 and 3-piston binders an ABS-free zone. Similarly anachronistic but effective is the mono air shock-equipped rear suspension, which is adjusted by inflation: for a stiffer ride, simply pump compressed air into the system via a Schroeder valve.

In spite of its leviathan 800+ lb mass, a low center of gravity and diminutive seat height enable surprisingly easy maneuverability. Large floorboards encourage impromptu hamstring and quadriceps stretches during long rides, and an optional electrically adjustable windshield modulates ventilation and turbulence levels. Dainty folding Lexan® winglets shield the knees from wind, and the sound of rushing air can be counteracted with options like XM satellite radio, iPod connectivity, and of course a good ol' fashioned high-flow exhaust system.

Exuding gobs of all-American character, the Vision is a refreshingly original take on the luxury touring motorcycle, and its polarizing looks and involving road manners are sure to draw more than a few riders to the Victory side of the road.

The Victory Vision Street starts at $18,999.
